In the section of the Bible, Psalms, many verses and chapters are poems and songs in devotion to God. These songs often are told using heavy symbolism and imagery in order to get the main theme across to those that read it. By doing so in this manner, the readers may have a simplified idea of what it takes to be a Christian and also what it takes to live a Christian life.

Psalms 91 is one of numerous psalms that are in this section. The psalm initially uses metaphor to portray an atmosphere of safety and security in the presence of God. This is done effectively by referring to God as a fortress. If God serves as a fortress, or shelter, then that individual is safe from outside harm that could cone upon them. Another example of symbolism is the comparing of God to that of a bird. By saying that He protects them by covering them in his feathers and taking them under His wings, it can be an allusion to a mother bird outstretching their wings to protect their chicks from the rain. Because the feathers are waterproof, the chicks will not get wet. This is an indirect saying that as long as God has His wings outstretched over us, we will not be wet with the oitside burden of sin.
